Smeg was founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzoni in the Italian province of Reggio Emilia, in the town of Guastalla. Immediately after the war, with the economy slowly flourishing, new family structures emerging and women taking on a different role in society, the company was created. Smeg responds to the new needs and desires of society, developing new appliances and technologies for households. Kitchen appliances are increasingly seen as a kind of status symbol.
In the second half of the 1950s, Smeg introduced one of the first gas stoves with automatic ignition, thermal protection in the oven and a timer with automatic shut-off. In 1963, the washing machine and dishwasher line was introduced. In 1970 a world first was introduced: the 60 cm dishwasher with 14 place settings. Cooktops and built-in ovens were included in the Smeg range in the mid-1970s. At the same time, cooperation with internationally renowned architects and designers began. In the 1990s, Smeg supplements its range with sinks, extractor hoods and colored 1950s refrigerators. These soon became known worldwide.
The company is still owned by the Bertazzoni family to this day. Its headquarters are located in Guastalla. Smeg is best known for its FAB 1950s style retro refrigerators.
