Dishwasher - Unclog the drain

Difficulty: Moderate
Estimated time: ± 20 minutes

Want to know how to unclog your dishwasher drain? Read here how to unclog a clogged dishwasher!

Always first:

  • Unplug the dishwasher.
  • Tip: When disassembling the old part, take regular pictures, so you can easily see how to reassemble the new part.

It is useful to first find out what is causing the blockage. This way you can solve the clog and also prevent it in the future! There are several causes that can cause a dishwasher clog. In most cases, a clog is caused by food residues. It is therefore wise to wipe dishes clean with a piece of kitchen paper and throw it away before putting them in the dishwasher. A clog can occur in several places.

Clogged filters
The filters of the dishwasher can be clogged by food particles or greasy deposits. In this case, you can simply take out the filter and clean it.

Drain hose clogged
Long-term deposits of greasy residue can also cause the drain hose to become clogged. A clogged drain hose can be cleaned or replaced. Should you want to replace the drain hose, in most cases you can simply unscrew the old drain hose. Then you can screw in a new drain hose. You can also try to unclog the drain hose. Try, for example, carefully with a piece of wire to check where the clog is. You can also put a tablespoon of baking soda in the hose and then run boiling water through it.

Drain pump clogged
The drain pump can also be clogged. In this case, the water can no longer be drained. To fix this problem, first remove the filter from the dishwasher. Underneath is the drainage pump. Check if the pump is clogged with food residue or something else is causing the blockage. When the pump can move freely again the clog is solved and you can plug the pump back in. You can also replace the dishwasher drain pump completely.
