ATAG was founded in 1948. Originally it is a Dutch company. The name ATAG comes from the initials of the founders, Anton Tijdink and Anton van Goor. ATAG's origins lie in the Achterhoek region. After World War II, a need arose for solid and functional cooking equipment. The Achterhoek was known for the Dutch cast iron industry, so ATAG started in a former iron foundry and first produced gas cookers and gas stoves. Anton van Goor soon left the company but Anton Tijdink remained director of ATAG until 1979.
In the 1980s, the company grew rapidly and developed many new appliances such as induction hobs and steam ovens. Around that time, ATAG also acquired the Pelgrim kitchen appliance company. ATAG continued to develop during that time thereafter. In 1967, the company entered the market with the first built-in gas cooktop. This line of products was further expanded in 1971 by adding refrigerators and dishwashers to the range, among others. By 1973, ATAG was already producing more than eighty different products, with an average of about 3,500 appliances rolling off the assembly line. In 1975 the ceramic cooktop came out and a few years later in 1979 the electric stove. In the early 1990s, the group fell apart and the company split into ATAG Heating and ATAG Benelux. ATAG is currently the brand name of ATAG Benelux. This includes the ASKO, Pelgrim and ETNA brands, among others. The company has been part of Gorenje Group since 2008.
