About the air conditioner

An air conditioner regulates the temperature and humidity in indoor spaces. The air conditioner was invented in 1902 by the American Willis Carrier. The idea was that the air conditioner could control and adjust the humidity and temperature in a printing house, so that the paper size and ink alignment could be kept constant. Later, Willis Carrier air conditioners were used to improve productivity at workplaces.

More and more Dutch households are also purchasing air conditioners. The use of air conditioning in the hot summers has increased significantly in recent years. How does an air conditioner work?

An air conditioner draws in (warm) air. This warm air is led through a space where liquid is evaporated. The heat from the air is taken away during evaporation and then cool air comes out of the air conditioner. In addition, moisture can be extracted from the air during the process so that the air conditioning system, in addition to cooling, also dries the air. An air conditioner has a closed system to prevent new fluid from being continuously evaporated. After evaporation, the coolant is collected and sent to a condenser so that the cycle can begin again.

The most common airco is the split-unit airco. The split unit air conditioning has a separate part on the outside where the coolant cools down. With the mobile air conditioner, the moisture is removed via a thinner hose and collected in a condensation pan. In addition, it extracts hot, humid air via an air hose that can be hung through a window or an opening in an outside wall. A somewhat newer type of air-conditioning that is emerging is the stand-alone air-conditioning. In stand-alone air-conditioning, both units are separately combined into one indoor unit.
